The last few years, three years to be in fact, I have chosen the words "Become" and "Holy" as my focus words for the year. You can see posts here, here, here, and you can find out more about this idea here at Ali Ewards site. I have found that although I loved the focus of becoming, I found that it was more difficult to measure my progress. This is what I wanted to accomplish:
become holy, patient, and full of love.
become more intelligent (learning and growing).
become an artist.
I think I have progressed in each of those areas, at least I hope I have, but I find I still want and need to work on these things. However, in the process of life, I have also found that I overstretch myself. I say yes to so many things, and conversely, it means I don't always do that I need to get done. So at lunch last week, as I was listening to a dear friend share her faith in God through some very difficult trials my word for the year came to me. I was doing everything I could, but sometimes I forgot the essential things that bring balance and peace in my life. So this year I will be focusing on the essential things.
All of those things I want to become are essential, but I am fine tuning and making actual goals that can be tracked. I am also trying to use up things I have here at home, like this PowerSheets workbook that I purchased last year and didn't use because of the binding. Who knows by the end of the year I might really like a coil binding.
As part of my 2018 study, I printed off a wide margin Book of Mormon. A few years ago I started cutting up an old small copy of the Book of Mormon and adding the verses to my scripture journal (see here), I have since seen these wide margin formats that I thought I would give a try this year. I don't know if there will be enough room for me to write everything, but it will be an interesting experiment. I purchased the pdf from Courtney Casper. She included some lovely lettered scripture verses.
I am excited to start studying today. I always love my time with God in the scriptures. The last few months I have been reading the scriptures, very slowly with the children underlining the names of Christ. I copied and printed off the names from this article, and we have enjoyed talking about Christ as we read.
