While I was cleaning through some files, I found this letter John had written to Whitney before she left on her mission back in early 2013. It makes me want to go back and find more such treasures and include them here.
At work I was thinking about the fact that this was the last afternoon/evening, we would be together for a year and a half, and my thoughts went back to a Summer day eighteen and a half years ago when I left work early because I received the news that you were taking your first steps. It was at this house because you and Mom were visiting Grandma, and I left immediately to come see you. You had a look of concerned determination in your beautiful blue eyes, and you looked so cute taking halting steps with your blond curls bouncing on your head.
I have loved watching each step you have taken since then, throughout your life, and I share your conviction that the Lord has led you step by step, giving you all of the experiences necessary for this new step in your life. You are such a good person and have such great faith in God and compassion for his children. I feel as your father to promise you that you will find the success the Lord has in store for you as you exercise these two gifts. Exercise your faith in the Lord every day, in prayer, study thought, and action, and you will see continual miracles. Be mindful of your companions and other missionaries and of those you teach. Look for those who struggle and need comfort, and as you are moved with compassion, again the Lord will work miracles through you. Finally, recognize those miracles, whether small or large and thank the Lord daily for them. As you do these things, the Lord will take you by the hand and bless you beyond your expectations. I love you with all of my heart and pray, and will continue to pray, for your happiness. Love, Dad."
